If the A-50 was shot by S-200, what was the final homing system for the rocket? The A-50 radar itself?

Expand full comment

Active radar homing of the missiles.

....of course, it could be that somebody added the HOJ-capability to them, but if this was really the case... oh dear: that would be a major development in this war.

Still, wouldn't there be to little S-200 around to make a difference?

Expand full comment

You mean 'too few S-200s left around'?

Well, if I'm to ask, 2-3 V-880s and a similar number of launchers - are perfectly enough.

Thanks Tom, I really, really, really hope it was the ex-Polish S200. Putin's head will explode. I fear there won't be anyone brave enough to tell him though.

Be sure, 'they' have no problem to tell him 'own goal' - because 'incompetence = no problem' in Russia.

I guess with 50% probability, Pu has no clue 2xA50s were lost. He doesnt use internet or any gadgets, all reports brought are on paper

100% true. According to Russian reports, I think at least one third of their aircrafts were shot down by friendly fire, they are sure about that. Nevertheless, in the case of the IL with war prisoners, they are also sure it was Ukraine.

Thanks Tom. If I may add, if the first A-50 was shot down by friendly fire, then why would they start flying the A-50s in Krasnador and the surrounding area instead of the Berdyansk area like before. All they would have done is remove the incompetent soldiers operating these deadly Russian GBADs within the Berdyansk/Crimea/Taganarog area. I think someone is going to come up with a theory that the Russian Air Defence soldiers who shot down the first A-50 were transferred to the Krasnador area where they made the same mistake but that Russia is still flying its A-50s wherever they want. Anyways thanks for the updates I thought the banzai attacks were successful, but this goes to show never trust the Russian military news.

Even Putin meanwhile says, it was 'means of air defence'.

He's such a delusional cretin!

Thank you!

Banzai attack is a good term for what the Russians have been doing. The Japanese pretty much ended these self defeating tactics after Saipan, instead they dug in deep and waited for the attack.

Well, that doesn't work for offensive action even when they are labelled as active defense.

Tom: yes indeedy do my wife did get a BIG kick out of "(or, shall I really write ‘kuddled’…?)."

Thank you

Thanks Tom,

Once the Russian identified the S-200 missile, and started firing their own against it, could it be that one of them just killed the A-50? Anyway, can these s-200s be used against SU-34 and other bombers?

As to the battlefield, interesting tactic. It puts the questions how many APVs has Russia still left. I remember the Ukrainian analyst Kovalenko writing several times that due to the lack of APVs the Russians are using battlefield tanks with a dozen of soldiers on it…

Thank you very much for all the cuddling ähh information.

Tom, in earnest do you think that the adequate supply from the West would be enough to win the war? Would Russia withdraw in such case?

"….but, it was ‘few tense hours for Ukrainian defenders." Unfortunately a lot more of that. Russian drone video said to be of the reinforcement moved there: https://t.me/rsotmdivision/14150
