For (the) Shark

Hello everybody!

‘Few months ago’, I’ve been approached with a… very specific, and very special request for help. Essentially, the 3rd Special Purpose Regiment of the SSU - one of special forces units of the Ukrainian Armed Forces - is trying to get a Shark reconnaissance UAV….

As might be obvious after two years of regular updates on the War in Ukraine, I am limiting myself to analysis: even if 'supportive' for Ukraine, I'm no 'activist'. Except for two specific medics serving with the ZSU, I've never even made any public recommendations for those who are actively supporting Ukraine.

….and I must admit: I’ve got a big problem with requesting any kind of help, no matter for what.

Back then (it was ‘September or so’), I was expecting that specific decisions agreed by the Atlantic Council might make this unnecessary. As should be obvious by now: I was wrong. Indeed, ever since, the (official) ‘West’ has done even less to support Ukraine defend itself from the Russian aggression than in the (almost) two years before).

Therefore, in early February, and via my Facebook account, I’ve launched a collection aimed to enable the 3rd Regiment SSU to get that Shark UAV.

Now: what is a ‘Shark UAV’?

It is a very advanced- and very complex piece of reconnaissance equipment. The UAV is just the flying component of it: it’s including an encrypted communication system, and has got an excellent range. Indeed, it's so complex that a single system comes together with guidance equipment installed on a purposely-made vehicle.

Unsurprisingly, the price tag for just one Shark UAV system is at €47,000 - 51,000.

For those who wonder how are they used? Well, one of Sharks the 3rd SSO has lost the last year was shot down by a Russian Buk SAM-system nearly 50km behind the Russian lines. More recently, one could see them finding and helping smash the stuff like this Russian Borsisoglebsk-2 electronic warfare system, ‘just’ some 15km behind the frontline…

The Borisoglebsk-2 in question is visible under ‘click to play’-arrow, in the centre of this screen-grab. In this case, it was killed by an UAV. At least as often, Sharks are used to guide attacks by HIMARS and MLRS’.

Think, this is ‘enough said’.

(And: for what else is the 3rd SSO doing: please, be so kind, google a bit around, I do not dare talking about most of affairs in question.)

People at the 3rd Regiment SSO are certain they can collect about a fifth of the required sum from their own pockets (which is how Ukrainian troops are financing about 50% of their UAVs, regardless what type): but, they need help with the rest.

Thus, they've asked if there is a way to help them...
