Not gonna lie, the vulnerability of Ukrainian army to flank attacks and resulting cauldrons is kinda depressing. Holding surrounded towns and losing men for political reasons and labeling it as victory later is even worse. Wonder if changing "Syrsky and buddies" will solve this issue.

It's a direct result of how the units are organized and the front lines defended. The successful brigade commanders that have emerged from this war know how to fight, but they can only control their brigades and not the units to their left and right. The old commanders will not change, will not learn or hold themselves accountable, and will not tolerate anyone that questions them.

Right now battalions split off from brigades tens to hundreds of kilometers away are interspersed with other battalions and brigades of varying qualities. A fundamental requirement in defensive operations is the counterattack to restore any breakthrough. It is evident over the years that these units thrown together are not backed by a reserve unit that could initiate a counterattack. The standard response is to throw more bits and pieces of units into the hole until the enemy attack eventually slows down. Even then, the response comes days later. By then, adjacent defenses are destabilized and the bulge continues like a jacket being unzipped.

Quite irritating, and I don't see the Ukraine High Command changing their micromanaging practices in the near future

You wrote: « Suicide by defenestration was the choice for 16 of Russia’s powerful businessmen and other enemies of the state. » The Thirty years war was supposedly starts by a defenestration in Prague. The victims survived, but it pissed of enough people to start a war. The Russians are doing this backward, starting with war and following up with denestration. They are better at killing though.

I thank you for these reports, but I really wish there could be a little bit better news regarding the front. It is the same pattern over and over again. Pokhrivsk will take months still’ and is probably not unavoidable at this stage, but I feel Ike it will be lost. I cannot see anything really stopping it.
