I really wonder what it takes to wake European leaders up. An invasion of Estonia? Bombs falling on Berlin? A nuclear bomb on London? Really, when will Europeans realize we are at WAR with Russia? I had hope that after this week of """diplomacy""" they would wake up and really begin acting against Putin. Now I lost all the hope.
Seems like you’re not paying attention to what Russian officials and propagandists themselves are saying. They’ve been calling this a war against NATO and the “collective West” for a long time. It’s a hybrid war — cyberattacks, destabilization, election meddling, energy blackmail. Whether you want to admit it or not, Europe is already involved. The question is: when will it acknowledge that?
Юра, don't tell me you seriously believe official BS. The task of all the goverments is to justify own mistakes by the external enemies. Like current British goverment which is babbling about Russian danger while destroying own economy and letting dozens of thousands islamists in. Instead of BSing about RU interference, Briton goverment should have investigated thousands(!) of rapes of underage girls by overseas barbarians.
While RU authorities are also BSiting about NATO danger, they have more ground for that. See the cases of RU tankers pirate-style captures, to say nothing about Ukraine armed to teeth by NATO weapons.
P.S. My classical question: is there any confirmed case of presumable RU cutting of sea communication cabels?)))
Tupolev16, you're missing the forest for the trees.
Hybrid warfare is official Kremlin doctrine. Read Gerasimov’s 2013 paper — the so-called "Gerasimov doctrine" openly describes non-linear war: destabilization, disinfo, economic and cyber pressure, even without open military conflict.
Russian state TV literally says they’re at war with NATO. Just watch “60 минут” or Solovyov. They daily threaten nuclear strikes on London, Warsaw, Berlin. That’s not fringe talk — it’s prime-time.
Cyberattacks, election meddling, poisoning abroad (Skripal, Litvinenko, Navalny) — all point to active, aggressive interference in the West, not just internal propaganda.
On the “no sea cables” point — Google "Russian spy ship Yantar" and the Russian deep-sea sub operations tracked around undersea cables. NATO published multiple alerts, and cable operators have increased security. No confirmed cut, yet, but the threat is taken seriously. That’s exactly how grey-zone ops work: intimidation, not declaration.
And about UK grooming gangs — yes, that scandal is real and terrible, but you're doing exactly what you accuse governments of: changing the subject to distract. One crime doesn't excuse another. Two wrongs don’t make a right.
Russia is conducting hybrid war. If you can't see it, you're already a casualty of it.
It is a systemic incompatibility and yes, Russia is at war with the west (I mean primarily Europe here). Early 2014. This is when the true attitude was revealed; Russia will act to preserve what it perceives as necessary buffer zones, this is unacceptable to the West and will result inevitably in the West's will being broken by Russia or Russia's will being broken by the West. One will submit to the other.
They have woken up. Really, they are trying to do things. But they are obviously thirty year behind what needs to be done. So they have woken up to a house on fire and they woke up naked. Further the person who did wake them up (no 47) was also the one they relied on for leading their fire brigade. And he threatens to do…. A lot of things unless they worship him. So they have to get clothed, appease the fireman, start fire fighting without the fireman understanding it (he can be distracted though) and do all this without irritating their even more uniformed spouse (aka the electorate). Who btw is uniformed because the politicians haven’t really tried. They are definitely not without guilt for the mess they are in. But they are trying. By all means’ continue to criticize them, but they are trying.
You have been left behind. There are already US missiles at the russian border in Finland and baltic countries. So no need to die for this reason. Referendum cancelled. Oh... maybe you are referring to the common russian propaganda for which the US will plant NUCLEAR missiles in Ukraine? They never did it in the Baltic, never did it in Poland, nor in Hungary or Romania... why should they now want suddendly to put them in Ukraine?
the logic of Russian opposition to US military bases, missiles, potentially nuclear missiles, the famous "mission creep"
has been very clearly exposed by the very US elites, military, foreign policy. in the case of Cuban missile crisis, some 60 years ago.
Although Soviet Union insisted they had no other intention but the well being of Americans & Cubans the Americans were ready to start a World War if necessary to stop Soviet Union from placing nuclear capable missiles close to their border.
You may and I disagree with US logic, Russian logic but have to understand, it is Americans who decide what they perceive as threat to U.S:, and it is Russians who decide what they perceive as threat to Russia
Again, russian propaganda. 60 years ago it made a difference to have missiles close or far away from home. Not anymore. You will just die 5 minutes before your enemy and 10 or 15 minutes after you know you will be dying. For example, nobody incinerated Moscow after the russians planted NUCLEAR MISSILES in Kaliningrad. Case closed.
Any signs anywhere of any attempt to help the Ukrainians? You know, the maybe 40 million people within those borders before all this? Or are plans still going ahead for 3/4 of them to kill the other quarter even if it costs every last man of the 3/4 ?
I think I heard it from Zelensky didn't I? I was under the impression that 'kiev ukraine' is sworn to conquering the whole of the donbas and that's what they're at this very moment trying to do. Am I wrong?
I realise they call it 'defending' but I mean, in fact - isn't that what they are trying to do?
Ah thank you for confirming that you are getting your ideas from Russia, where there probably are some crazy people who actually think Ukraine's desire to maintain its borders (those same borders previously guaranteed by Russia) is the same thing as "conquering" and that Ukraine's desire to kick out Putin's raping, torturing murdering, invaders from its own land is the same thing as planning to kill 1/4 of your population.
I think we have nothing to talk about to each other. So hopefully this will be my final comment.
Not only are 3/4 of the Ukrainian population officially set on a course to conquer and eliminate 1/4 of the population - at any cost to themselves whatever - but they have the sworn help of the world's biggest economy and 50 nations from the world's biggest collection of sycophantic puerile asslickers.
Like: there ain't no doubt about it.
And I'll close with this: that 1/4 now having been cloistered with 'the raping, torturing, murdering, invaders' one would expect two things:
1. Much screaming and resistance from the poor subject invaded population and
2. Much hand wringing and bemoaning and worrying and desperate attempts from the 3/4 to save that 1/4 from their horrible situation.
It is noticeable, by anyone who looks, that both of these things are totally missing.
Keep on taking the pills. And good luck in finding another forum which will listen to your idea that Ukraine is a bunch of murderers and those of us who care about it are "peurile asslickers". By the way, did that spelling of puerile come from your translator or were your hands shaking?
Wow. Someone's been watching a bit too much Russian state TV, huh? You might wanna take a break before Solovyov starts renting space in your brain full-time. Poor thing — clearly suffering from an acute case of "propagandosis."
Seriously though, this fantasy novel you wrote? Impressive. Needs a dragon, though. Or maybe just some actual facts.
Anyway, rest well in your echo chamber. May your next comment section be less dramatic.
"In addition to increasing the range of drones, developments need to be made in the defense against drones"
Dear Don and Tom, I did a few features on that, focusing as much as possible on currently available technologies. In fact it is not possible to increase range using existing approach (explained in part 3), unless one uses fixed wing drones, or petroleum engines.
Here someone well known and well informed in Ukraine shares similar feelings. The only thing I disagree is "fundamental science". It is a way to go, before fundamental science matters. Now it is all about existing or emerging technologies, organisation and focus. And clear vision.
Yes. I saw that my own country Norway actually liked China better. This makes me quite sceptical to the methods employed. What you are seeing is a deep distrust of Trump, not support of Trump. But it has been a titanic shift. And while a new president (not Vance) may improve relations somewhat this shift is to stay.
After 70 years the USA decides to get out of the empire business by declaring economic war against planet Earth! Earth is entirely stunned, surprised, flabbergasted, cannot make sense of it because there is none, other than make me and my crowd richer. You could say, the States hold the record for world's major instigator of disruption! It's Exceptional.
The problem is not in Trump only, but in EU too. U.S. citizens have less social and medical security than in EU, have less holidays, etc. So, they are fed up paying security to the rich and lazy EU and I think they are right. EU is fully capable help Ukraine by it's own but we are not doing it. It's a big shame.
Trump has threaten NATO countries which did not have paid 2% to defence not to protect them during his first term. Then Biden was back at friendly US policy and what EU (+ Canada) did in return? Nothing. If they would increased their defence spending like they promised, they would show that good relations and cooperation bring changes. Instead, they showed they are willing to change when threatened only.
First, several NATO countries increased their spending also during the Biden years. Second, are you really paying security for Europe? I agree you did up til the collapse of the Soviet Union. After? That’s a much more difficult question. If you break down US defense spending I how much is spent in Europe and how much elsewhere? Since you have too little social security and health care as a society you even add your health care to the military as part of the budget. I understand that it’s logical for you, but no other countries to my knowledge does. What US has provided has been a lot, but not so much payment as a structure. Also regarding spending we do spend quite a bit on US weapons. The reason however why we Europeans and Canadians are pissed at USA now is not so much that you are forcing us to increase spending but that you are altering the deal. And we trust you now as much as Lando trusted Darth Wader after he altered the deal. Personally I am most pissed of on the way he treats Ukraine, not us Europeans. We will outlast JD Vance. But in Ukraine? The Us doesn’t even have to do anything. Just sell some equipment, share some data (which is paid back by Ukraine I am sure) and leave the war alone. Yes, urge Europe to responsibility, very fine, get us to invest more in security. I totally agree. I am afraid that you are also right regarding the perception of the average US voter about Europe, but I really hope you are somewhat better informed. But the dismay was earned.
Sorry for the lack of precision in reading. Should have done better. Still disagree with that analysis, at least the part that US pays for the support. Lazy and spoiled… less sure. Naive and gullible towards politicians yes. Not necessarily a kinder analysis. But we have failed in providing enough support for Ukraine, on that we can agree.
We are still failing miserably. The war is going for 3 years omgsh it was more than enough time to build up war industry. Even North Korea sends more arty shells to Russia than EU to Ukraine. And some good part of that shells EU sent have been bought from other, non-EU countries. And SA missilies. And powerful log-range kamikadze drones like Shahed. Etc.
Thanks Don and Tom. Some questions about Russian drones/missiles and Ukraine's interceptors (F16, mirage etc). What % of those destroyed by planes are by autocannons vs missiles? How do pilots do targeting with autocannons? Is there room for improvement with this?
There wont be any diplomatic end managed by Trump, I dont believe even in continuos support of UA from USA side (not talking about systematic weapons delivery even for cash)
The only chance is to icrease economic preasure on russia and suport Ukraine both economy and military.
We have to put preassure on our govenments, it is no time for procrastination but actions
Anyone can support any cent counts, even mentioning possibilities to donate/support counts. There is about 1,2B people living at so called free world (if 1 out of 100 donates a single $ a month, this represent 140m$ a year (e.g. 250k FPV drones or 100k 152mm granates or...)

Fight fire with fire. The gloves have to come off.
In WW2 the decision to destroy Dresden was a strategic one.
Perhaps the same approach needs to happen vs Russia…?
Oh and it seems to me Israel has alot to answer for. While France, Canada and the UK have railed against their cleansing of Gaza it’s clear they are playing the west for fools when they are happily supplying Russia with chip technology.
About time Israel was added to the list of pariah states methinks
EU should support, join and learn the fast innovations on the battlefield. Just giving money is not enough. It's necessary to learn how to make fast innovations, apply them widely and setup flexible production which is possible to scale up and change. some of these flexible production should be on EU land to learn ho to do it.
It would be interesting to parse out what fraction of that collapse in US soft power came from the election of Trump and his trade war bellicosity, and which from the bipartisan complicity in the Gaza genocide.
Not that it would really help the US leadership to know, because they are unable to change course in either respect. (Yes the Democrats could "win" again, but either way, the direction of travel in the US is more oligarchy, and more class struggle getting channeled into angry nationalism that tears the post-1991 and post-1945 order to pieces.)
I really wonder what it takes to wake European leaders up. An invasion of Estonia? Bombs falling on Berlin? A nuclear bomb on London? Really, when will Europeans realize we are at WAR with Russia? What kind of drugs you take? Which war with Europe? Take some tranquilizer, please

Except for usual babbling by politicians: I see none.
The 'news of the week' is the above-mentioned Rheinmetall-LM 'joint venture'. Will come handy to manufacture obsolete missiles in 2028....
