Seems that all the pre-war estimates for the number of tanks and (especially) artillery pieces in their service are wildly exaggerated.
So, when the Russians achieve a 'local breaktrough' like this at Sviatohirsk/Svyatohirsk, they can react only by rushing infantry in their way. The infantry is meanwhile at least reasonably well-trained and, definitely, well-equipped, but lacking heavy weapons necessary to effect large-scale destruction of Russian units.
Result are bloody battles that go on for days...
