Because it's - politically - crucial to prevent the Russians from capturing entire Donbas. If they do so Putin's going to run another (quasi-)referendum, and do an Anschluß of it to Russia. If Ukrainians then counterattack and advance into Donbas (to liberate it), Putin's going to declare that an attack on all of Russia.... Of course, that sounds 'absurd', but matter of fact is: that's than - not only iuridically, but in regards of military affairs too (see: nukes) - an entirely different pair of shoes but what has been fought so far.
