It's Putin, the Russians folloing him blindly, and all the possible Putin-fans abroad who need realising few things.

The war is fought because Putin is obsessed with avoiding accountability for all of own, outrageous crimes, and thus considering democracy for mortal threat.

....and because the Russians are indoctrinated that they're 'internationalists' while anybody who dares not being Russian is am extremist and chauvinist - so also all the people opressed (and mass-murdered) by the Russians for centuries already.

From that point of view, this is a war of making it clear to the Russians that Ukraine is Ukraine, no Russia. Once and forever. Period.
