Re. what to read.... that's hard. there are next to no military histories of the Ukrainian War since 2014, and the handful I happen to know are... hm.... I cannot recommend them (except one is eager to waste his/her time).
....at least there is one book I consider something like 'must read' when it comes to the Russian Armed Forces:
Really, no better way but to introduce yourself to this topic - especially the chapters on how is the RFA organised, and then about the failure of Putin's 'reform attempts' of the late 2000s. Best of all is: it's so well-written, and such an easy read, one needs not being any kind of 'military buff'.
