Initial idea was something along the line: VDV + Spetsnaz + Rosgvardia = overrun the enemy leadership, RFA follows-up with a high-speed Sunday Afternoon Parade.

It was only 2-3 days into the war that the Ukrainians recovered from the initial shock and began fighting back. Except in Kherson and Melitupol, whatever was there of the RFA, was smashed to pieces (see Sumy, Kharkiv etc.).
....by then, some of RFA's armies were stretched over 150-200km of highways and 2-3 major urban centres. Little surprise then, they were cut to pieces and had to withdraw.
But, there was back then, and the reason why this war is meanwhile three months old: beause the RFA spent so much time trying to secure different towns on its way.
In the East, the situation was different in so far that the RFA spent thousands of Separatists to punch through the LOC. Now it has concentrated all of its remaining offensive power at a very narrow portion of the front.
Ukraine failed to do so - and i'm convinced it was a mistake to evacuate Popasna, instead of reinforcing it.
