I had assumed that the newly focused tactics were a response to the war in Iran i.e. Zelensky says if Trump is trying to save Russia's economy with his lunacy, we might as well go all out to stop them exporting oil.

Disclaimer: The following is my opinion, based on reading and seeing a lot of stuff here and there. It does not represent official ZSU "way of doing things". But it seems rather probable, imho.

There is a subltle difference between a regiment and a brigade un UAF. It's not just the size.

A regiment is usually homogenous - a tank regiment has tank battalions, an infantry regiment has infantry battalions, an artillery regiment has artillery divisions. They might have company-sized support units, but they don't have a combined arms features a brigade has. A mech (or assault) brigade would have some mech battalions, an artillery division or even a regiment, AA division, tank battalion, comms, ECM, UAV battalions, etc.

So a brigade should work as a cohesive combined arms tactical unit (at least in theory - see Tom's remarks about Syrsky). A regiment, being homogenous, is easier to administer, but it is (was) intended to be used under a division command (in USSR), in a way a battalion is used under a brigade command.

Going back to assault regiments - I bet an assault regiment is like an "administrative shell" to all its battalions. It handles supplies, paperwork, finance, medical service, training, etc. But each assault battalion can be used separately, and that is usually an intended way to use it - to plug holes and fight fires. Syrsky-style, if you like.
