"It amazes me that there isn’t a larger public protest over these issues like there was over the attempt to restrict anti-corruption agencies"

Opinion from a Ukrainian.

The majority of Ukrainian public that would be willing to protest against anything is split into 2 categories:

1) Conscription aged men of lower class, aka "peasants". Men are not going to go protesting anywhere because they will be immediately kidnapped into the army before even getting to any protest.

2) Young people/women - these are directly controlled by Telegram channels like Sternenko and Lachen. These are the 2 biggest "volunteers" in Ukraine that control any protests that happen in Ukraine. They were the ones that said to go out to protest when the anti corruption thing happened.

This is where we come to the main issue: Neither Sternenko or Lachen are allowed to criticise Zelensky in any way shape or form. They both indirectly white-washed Zelensky during the anti corruption protests. I.e. it's all the "bad parliament" not Zelensky who signed the law.

Sternenko has SBU security for example and I'm fairly certain he's basically under direct control by SBU. Lachen is essentially the same except it's even more obvious he's under Zelensky's control.

The main problem then is that these 2 bloggers control anyone that is willing to go out to protest. They are the ones that are supposed to call for protests. Who would the protest be against? Most likely it's a protest to ask Zelensky to reform the army, which comes back to the fact that these 2 figures will never organise any such protests.

Although Sternenko writes in his Telegram channel that "there is need for an army reform" he always avoids mentioning Zelensky's name - from whom this initiative should come from. It's always some abstract entity "military-political leadership" that's supposed to do this and not Zelensky. It's really not quite clear to me who exactly he is talking about that's supposed to enact this change. He also talks about "uniting around Zelensky" in his youtube videos so for me it's quite clear who controls him.

Hope that explains it. This is just my opinion.

Thank you for your work, Tom and Don.

I have been reading your reports since the beginning of the full-scale invasion. For me, as a Ukrainian, they are often a cold-shower - hard but necessary to absorb.

I agree that we face deep systemic problems across many areas, from the military to politics and beyond. You have articulated many of these issues with precision.

I have one question. After reading the recent reports outlining how severe the current situation is, I find myself feeling discouraged and at times hopeless. What would you suggest to an ordinary Ukrainian who wants to contribute in a meaningful way, at least within the scale of what an individual can realistically do?
