Don's Weekly, 17 June 2024: Part 1

It’s Monday, and thus the time for Don’s review of the last week.

In some places, Russia is digging in and the toll on their excavators continuously increasing. Ukraine is fighting in Hlyboke and has recovered half the village. Russian drones are still taking their toll on Ukrainian artillery, damaging five pieces with shelling damaging a sixth.

The most severe fighting is in Vovchansk. After one Russian attack, a Ukrainian counterattack went better than expected, pushing back the Russians a couple blocks and isolating pockets of Russian troops in larger buildings, two of which were bombed by the Ukrainian air force. There are reports that 200-400 Russian troops are trapped in the Vovchansk Aggregate Plant, which was also bombed. These two have surrendered, but the others are - so far - refusing:

Of course, their supplies in ammunition, food and water are limited.

Since Russian assaults are being stopped and the Ukrainians are inside the town in numbers, it is unlikely that the trapped Russians will be able to break out.

Inside Russia, an SPG is destroyed. I’m not sure why a third drone was used when the gun was already catastrophically burning but it could be that it was already sent on a long trip and didn’t have enough battery energy to make a return trip…https://x.com/front_ukrainian/status/1800098629044338901

Tom has mentioned how a lot of Russian glide bombs malfunction. This one dropped onto a Russian town ten kilometers north of Vovchansk. The person who posted this video blames Ukraine but he has his own government to thank.

Both the Russians and Ukrainians have attacked each other’s drones and the number of videos showing Russian attacks outnumber videos of Ukrainian drones attacking. There has been at least one Ukrainian Baba Yaga drone shot down that was worth $25,000, but the rest of the drones were FPVs that are inexpensive. Now there are three videos of Ukrainian FPV drones attacking Zala drones, worth $33,000, and an Orlan drone, worth around $100,000.
